Your radon mitigation fan keeps air moving from beneath your home and vents it outside. Over time, radon fans can wear out, lose power, become noisy, or stop working. If that happens, your system may no longer be creating the suction needed to help reduce radon levels. One of the easiest ways to check your system is by looking at the manometer. A manometer is the small U-shaped gauge usually located on the radon pipe. It contains colored liquid and gives you a quick visual check that the fan is creating suction. When the fan is working, one side of the liquid should be higher than the other. If both sides are even, there is no pressure difference, which may mean the fan is off, unplugged, failed, or needs replaced. A manometer does not measure radon levels. It only measures pressure in the system, usually in inches of water column, or inWC. Radon levels can only be confirmed through radon testing or monitoring.
Your system should have a baseline reading from when it was installed.
If the reading suddenly drops, sharply increases, or no longer matches the normal range for your system, the fan may be losing performance or another issue may be present.
